Acyclovir proves to be safe in persons who have it continuously (every day) for as long as 10 years. It is well absorbed, persists for a longer time in the body, and can be taken less frequently than acyclovir.Valtrex is available in generic form.

Side effects of Valtrex include:

The dose of Valtrex depends on the condition at hand. Taken as tablet that may be taken with or without food. Valtrex may interact with, lithium, methotrexate, pain or arthritis medicines, medicines to treat ulcerative colitis, medicines used to prevent organ transplant rejection, IV antibiotics, antiviral medicines, or cancer medicines. Valtrex showed no effects on the fetus ; however, there has been no adequate evaluation of Valtrex or (acyclovir) in pregnant women. Valtrex should only go during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother outweigh risks to the fetus. The safety of Valtrex in breastfeeding infants is still under investigations . Methods other than breastfeeding should be put into considerations  if Valtrex must be put in use  while nursing.

VALTREX may  without regard to meals.•Valacyclovir oral suspension (25 mg/mL or 50 mg/mL) may be prepared extemporaneously from 500-mg VALTREX Caplets for use in pediatric patients for whom a solid dosage form is not appropriate.

In adults, it is  treats shingles ( by herpes zoster) and cold sores around the mouth. Valacyclovir also treats outbreaks of genital herpes. Valacyclovir decreases the severity and length of these outbreaks. It helps the sores heal faster, keeps new sores from forming, and decreases pain/itching.

Valacyclovir works best if you take within 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes (e.g., pain, burning, or blisters) begin to appear. For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, valacyclovir works best you take  within a time frame of  24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear.  Also, taking lower doses of acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir over time can help prevent shingles from recurring. However, this is a recommendation  only for those who have a history of frequent recurrences.

Consequently Valtrex (valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug. That is to say It slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus to help the body fight the infection. On the other hand Valtrex takes care of  infections caused by herpes viruses, including genital herpes, cold sores, and shingles (herpes zoster) in adults.

Suppressive Therapy: The recommended dosage of VALTREX for chronic suppressive therapy of recurrent genital herpes is 1 gram once daily in patients with normal immune function. In patients with a history of 9 or fewer recurrences per year, an alternative dose is 500 mg once daily.
